GOAL


	To thread uncharted waters, cross disciplines, use my filter as a designer, maker, and thinker, bring a gadget from childhood fantasies to real life, to build it all from scratch by leveraging my background as an industrial designer and the power of genuine global collaboration.

	Research indicates that our relationship to thought frameworks, such as superstitious luck, is a uniquely human experience resulting from thousands of years of evolution. 

It is part of the complex web of stories we tell ourselves as a species to conveniently situate ourselves in a reality we designed. This guides our imagination around the objects we choose to make and prioritize.

	In the larger sphere of the stories we tell ourselves, what if we use design and its language to probe deeper into these cognitions?&#38;nbsp;
What if we treat superstitions as ‘challenges’ worthy of commercial design intervention?
If industrial design grew in and around the priorities and belief systems of the part of the world where I grew up, the black cat radar would be an ‘obvious product.’

	ASSEMBLING THE TEAM
	
	Coming up with the concept, visual language of the hardware, detailed plans for the operating software, and exact physical interaction moments, I needed to gather a team of experts to bring the ideas to life.


The power of the internet, cold messaging, and emailing gave me direct access to the global engineering and manufacturing community. After hundreds of failed attempts, I finally assembled my dream team - a group of passionate, generous, warm, and highly talented individuals who were excited to work with me.

	ENGINEERING
COLLABORATION
	
	Over the course of 4 months, I directed a team of 4 professionals across UX design, software development, electronic engineering, and manufacturing to prepare a feasible MVP. However, constraints such as budget, programming difficulties, long development lead times, and a host of supply chain hiccups twisted and altered many of my original design decisions.

I held my ground on the most important features and accepted compromises for negligible ones to create the first-generation BCR.

	After days of battling time zone differences, long debugging Zoom calls, and back-and-forth messages at midnight with some of the most passionate human beings I've ever met, I realized the beauty of existing with a creative force like no other. 
The synchrony was pure, and the curiosity was genuine, allowing us to push through this self-paced, crazy passion project. The team members, hailing from 4 different parts of the world, became good friends, and now we send cat memes to each other every day.

	These tools are most effective when you know exactly what you want. Taking a Swift course helped me quickly get the basics of the jargon and structure, making my prompting much more precise. A reminder to myself: always start with pen and paper—blinking cursor syndrome is very real with these tools.

	INDUSTRY COLLABORATION
	
	Opening a microwave is dangerous due to the high-voltage capacitors inside. To ensure safety, I had an electronic engineer supervise the discharge of the circuit before reprogramming it. 
With the assistance of a creative technologist, I developed a custom Arduino circuit to power the microwave's new arithmetic brain.

	WORKING MODEL
	
	A microwave has multiple buttons and functions that are already similar to those on a calculator, such as addition, subtraction, and a clear button. To me, a microwave was always a calculator that is waiting to be unlocked.

	REAL-WORLD TESTING
	

	I went to Whole Foods to buy groceries, and I brought my microwave to add up my grocery bill and heat up some food after. When I arrived, I found that the microwave conveniently fit into the shopping cart, which made it easy to transport around the store.

CONTEXT
	Humanity has run out of fresh water. The only way to quench the thirst of the 13 billion population is by desalinating ocean water. The species is left with an abundant amount of salt as the byproduct. So much so that it's essentially free. This battery capitalizes on that free salt.&#38;nbsp;

USING THE SALT BATTERY
	The salt battery is based on the principle of redox reactions, where electrons are transferred between different metals. In this case, scrap zinc and copper is used. When salt water is added, a flow of electrical energy is created.

LIVING A SALT WORLD
	While the government is frantically trying to establish a relevant tax system to disincentivize it, going about one’s day with self-generated energy is highly desirable and affordable.

	RESEARCH
	
	To create a design for a world fully immersed in salt, I must also be fully immersed in salt. Only then can I understand the nuances of the world I am building.

	DESIGN PROCESS &#38;nbsp;
	

	Most of the components of the salt battery are readily available objects. My intervention focused on creating open source connector parts, such as drainage valves, bottle holders, and retrofitable components, to make the build more intuitive and seamless.

	Collaborated with the Times Square Alliance to create provocations for unimagined futures for the world famous city block. Reflecting on existing social, technological, ecological, and political signals, a live scene was choreographed on site to encourage public engagement with speculative thought.

CONTEXT
	Manhattan’s geographic diversity has given rise to genetically distinct varieties of rats. A brutal turf war between uptown and downtown rats at Times Square caused the suspension of certain subway lines.

The underfunded MTA struggles to regain control amidst civil war.

	BUILDING FUTURES
	

	Various foresight and futures thinking tools, such as Futures Wheels, the Delphi Method, and the STEEP Analysis Model, were used to establish connections between signals, study imaginative boundaries, and critique the collective understanding of futures design. 

These tools enabled for consistent construction of a narrative that was just the right length and depth to effectively provoke imaginative thought among the public.

	INTENTION
	

	Minus the flying cars and the humanoid robots, it is hard to think outside of cliches about the future. But there is strong potential for unthought yet plausible futures to exist our collective imagination. 

This is an exciting case for designers to study. To be the one not just designing products and experiences, but ways of thinking about 'tomorrow'. With the future cones in mind, this project was an attempt to tap into a scene from an unfamiliar thought framework based entirely in Times Sq and the energy of New York City.

	Wild deer love turnips. For centuries, humans have used turnip plants as bait to hunt deer. However, this project focuses on designing for the deer themselves. How can we create play structures for them using the very turnips they love so much?

	METHOD
	

	The bulbous turnip is machined into a tetrahedron shape with six connector points. Wooded twigs of standardized lengths will be attached to these turnip connectors, to build up a geometric structure. 

A jig is designed to produce uniformly-shaped turnip tetrahedrons. The same jig can also be used to create precisely angled, symmetrical holes to attach twigs.

	To use the methods of the design process, such as prototyping and user testing, and apply them to non-human subjects. In this case, the end user is wild deer, so the affordances are to be adjusted accordingly.

	ANTICIPATED USER BEHAVIOR &#38;nbsp; 
	
	The wild deer approaches the structure with sheer joy and an inventive sense of play, bewilderment, and productivity.

	ACTUAL USER BEHAVIOR 
	
	Wild deer shy away from any engagement after sensing danger from the human odor that was left on structures.
	

	NEXT STEPS
	
	Try again. 

Wild deer are known to be extremely cautious and will often flee at the slightest hint of danger. This natural instinct is a result of centuries of evolution in which deer have learned to avoid humans as much as possible in order to protect themselves from potential predators.

This behavior is not necessarily permanent. With a better understanding of deer behavior, it is possible to approach them in a non-threatening manner and establish a sense of trust. This can be achieved through various means, such as leaving food in a designated area and slowly moving closer over time.&#38;nbsp;How could design be used to develope these?

	The Dosa, a traditional Indian dish beloved for its delicate and crispy texture, is notoriously difficult to transport due to its fragility. This machine finally puts a long Dosa on the menu for an outdoor picnic.&#38;nbsp;

CONTEXT
	This wooden machine is specifically designed for a 32” long dosa. It is designed to be handled by 2 people, to be taken into restaurants, and receive their orders for a dimensioned Dosa with care. The Dosa will live in a heated (climate controlled) compartment during transport.

	FEATURES
	
	A layer of banana leaves is used inside the heated chamber to provide for a hygienic and traditional eating surface. The bulged ends can store upto 3 liters of sambar and chutney. The machine opens up to a mini table to enjoy the 32” long dosa in the desired picnic location.

	Climate Controlled Dosa Picnic Basket, Goa, Dec 2024
The Serendipity Arts Festival commissioned us to host picnics on the banks of the Mandovi River. We worked with a team of chefs to make four-foot-long dosas, which were installed in four locally built baskets. We gathered as a procession to transport the baskets to a picnic site for an open-to-all outdoor celebration of the dosa.
Thank you to LinYee, Mold Magazine, and Edible Issues for inviting us to dine at the Serendipity Arts Festival. We had the privilege of working with Studio Kadak, who fabricated the baskets with local materials and expertise. Their tireless passion and craftsmanship brought this vision to life. Special thanks to all the volunteers who made this celebration possible.

CONTEXT
	These recipes are generated using IBM q-composer with access to IBM Quantum Computers. The Bernstein–Vazirani quantum algorithm was used to build a system that would create recipes. 

With the dataset generated by a 3 qubit circuit, a brownie recipe system with over 16.7 million possibilities was created. By embracing the noise of the data and by entertaining ideas of entanglement and superposition, The first ever Quantum Cooking Recipe Collection (2022) is born.

	INTENTION
	

	As a designer, I challenged myself to make Quantum (computing, physics, theory, etc.) accessible to a broader audience. Quantum computing is an approaching technological revolution that might change the world, and most people do not know what it is.

	BACKGROUND
	

	The simulation of molecules is one of the most extensive applications of quantum computation in scientific pursuit today, with use cases ranging from pharmaceutical drug testing to nuclear chemistry. We thought about how this could affect the everyday. We came across new avenues of research suggesting the simulation of physical properties like the smell and taste of molecules. We proposed Quantum Cooking to generate truly random recipes that embrace noise, recipes with entangled ingredients to balance out flavors, and simulating the taste of recipes that don’t (yet) exist.What if you could taste the Sun? What if you could cook with asteroid dust? Quantum cooking might just let you.
